Abstract

Indonesia has diverse cultures and languages, namely Indonesian as the national language, and regional languages ​​as one of the ethnic identities in Indonesia, and foreign languages ​​are also variants of languages ​​in Indonesia. Therefore, Indonesian society has the potential to become a bilingual or even multilingual society. One example can be seen in Jember Regency, which is known as the pandhalungan culture, which is an assimilation between Javanese culture and Madurese culture, such as in Jember Regency with Javanese speakers as minority speakers and Madurese speakers as majority speakers. The blending of the two speech communities has an effect on the maintenance of the language used. The purpose of this study is to describe the level of maintenance and factors that influence the level of Javanese language maintenance in the Gumuk Limo Hamlet, Nogosari Village, Rambipuji District, Jember Regency. The results of the study indicate that the use of Javanese by the Javanese ethnic community has a moderate to high level of language maintenance. The factors that cause the level of Javanese language maintenance are due to the factors of ridicule and self-adjustment.
