Abstract

This research aims to apply Charles Sanders Peirce's Triadic semiotic theory in interpreting the
Quran according to the thoughts of Ibnu 'Arabi, specifically on verse Q.S. An-Nur: 35. The Triadic
semiotic theory offers a new approach or method for understanding symbols, signs, and meanings
in a text. In the Triadic semiotic theory, signs are divided into three main elements, namely the
representamen which is the physical sign, the object it represents, and the interpretant which is the
meaning or concept related to the sign. This research used a qualitative method with a descriptive
analytical approach in several steps. The literature review, where researchers collected relevant
literature sources such as books, journals, to learn more about the Triadic semiotic theory of Peirce
and the interpretation of Ibnu 'Arabi. Text analysis was conducted to examine the structure, context,
and meaning of the verse according to the interpretation of Ibnu 'Arabi. Furthermore, the analysis
focused on how the Triadic semiotic theory of Peirce could be applied to interpret the verse. The
results of this study showed that the use of the Triadic semiotic theory of Peirce could provide a
sharper and deeper understanding of the meaning of symbols and signs contained in the verse Q.S.
An-Nur: 35, especially in the context of understanding the light of Allah. Ibnu 'Arabi's interpretation
of the verse indicates that the light of Allah is understood as a manifestation of God in human life.
The light is a symbol of truth and a good life that will benefit humanity in the future.
